Coaching and therapy are valuable forms of personal development and support, but they serve distinct purposes. Coaching primarily focuses on the present and the future, helping individuals set and achieve specific goals, develop skills, and maximize their potential. It is action-oriented, collaborative, and often utilized to enhance performance in various aspects of life, such as career, relationships, or personal growth. On the other hand, therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, delves into the past and present to address emotional or psychological issues, heal from trauma, manage mental health conditions, and gain self-awareness and insight.
As a coach, I do not provide formal diagnoses nor serve as the primary support provider for high-acuity mental health needs, crises, active substance use concerns, or major trauma. Given my Masters's Level Training and clinical experience, I can easily support individuals who need more support to make this transition and explain the therapeutic or higher-level treatment process more in-depth. I can also help prepare clients for that work as needed and have sometimes worked as a secondary support for individuals on the coaching side of their recovery plan.
My focus in our work is on shame resilience and as such, we will discuss aspects of your past and dynamics in your early life to explain the roots and role of your shame in your present life. This may include discussions surrounding trauma, loss, insecure attachment, abuse, etc but again, this work will not be the primary focus in our coaching relationship.
