What Didn't Suck?
“Asking yourself this question isn't looking for you to sing about rainbows and unicorns, you are just looking for something less shitty focus on.”
The more we focus on the negative, the more it expands?
It is so easy to get caught in a cycle of negativity -- cycling through the list of things that did not go your way, or that have been done to you, or all the ways you "suck".
It's like the red car theory. Once you get a red car, you become aware of all of the other red cars out there. The more you focus on the negative, the easier it is to keep being negative, and the ripple effect of that can be incredibly detrimental to your health and well-being.
What's an easy way to try and counter that?
When you notice yourself stuck in that cycle, ask yourself "what didn't suck"? It is along the same lines as asking yourself what went well, but sometimes that can feel like too much of a stretch. Asking yourself this question isn't looking for you to sing about rainbows and unicorns -- it doesn't even have to be positive. Instead, you are just looking for something less shitty or neutral to focus on. I mean, sure, if we can find something positive, that is a great thing, but ultimately it’s not essential to break the cycle. We just need to shift our brain's pattern away from viewing only the negative and the habit of complaining to break out of this vibe.
